HOUSING FOR
TRANSITION-AGE FOSTER YOUTH

At any given time, Marin County has 25-35 transition-age foster youth in the dependency system. While housing vouchers help a newly independent young person afford housing, many landlords simply won’t “chance” renting to a young person in these circumstances. We have seen firsthand the challenges facing transition-age youth. In response, our Board of Directors established meeting this housing need for transition-age foster youth as one of our organization’s strategic priorities. We knew we had to think differently to solve this problem - so we acquired two apartment buildings to support the needs of this vulnerable group.

Creating Housing Solutions for Transition-Age Youth

Our primary focus is to sustain a dependable source of housing for youth aging out of the foster care system, so that they do not experience homelessness or languish in temporary, unstable, or unsafe housing situations. Additional goals include allowing youth to stay in Marin, so they are not disconnected from established support systems and preserving much-needed affordable housing in Marin.

Sustainable housing gives transition-age youth a stable start to independence and a more equal opportunity to thrive in their higher education and job pursuits and eliminates the myriad of risks faced by homeless youth.
